First Light Festival: A Beacon of Community Spirit, Culture, and Sustainability

The First Light Festival is not just a local event; it's a vibrant testament to the collective creative spirit of Lowestoft, the easternmost town in the UK. It is more than a one-time celebration; it is a year-round beacon of community engagement, sustainability, and cultural revitalisation.

The Festival, organised by the First Light Festival Community Interest Company (CIC), is a unique celebration of the summer solstice. It offers an incredible array of music, theatre, dance, and arts, drawing both locals and international visitors alike. The festival goes beyond merely showcasing talent; it builds local community bonds, strengthens the cultural fabric, and puts Lowestoft on the map as an emerging creative hub.

In its second run in June 2022, the Festival attracted an estimated 35,000 attendees, a 20% increase compared to the inaugural 2019 event, despite adverse weather conditions. The festivities included 190 events with a diverse range of music, dance, spoken word, and visual arts, all nestled along Lowestoft's stunning South Beach.

The First Light Festival is not only a significant cultural event but a vehicle for social impact. With 96% of survey respondents claiming the Festival improves Lowestoft's image and 93% considering it welcoming to the entire community, the festival plays a vital role in fostering community pride and unity.

But the Festival doesn't limit its reach to the physically present audience. In an effort to improve accessibility, performances and workshops were live-streamed, BSL interpretation was provided, a free buggy taxi service was introduced, and physical access to beach venues was improved with temporary trackway. In this way, the festival found a way to extend its inclusive spirit to those who couldn't attend in person.

One of the Festival's outstanding successes is its engagement with young, local talents. The New Dawn stage provided a platform for emerging musicians, and music tech students were given placements to work alongside experienced stage management, lighting, and sound teams. It's not only about displaying talent but about developing it too, nurturing the artists of the future.

In terms of sustainability, the Festival made commendable strides, reflecting its respect for Lowestoft's natural environment. From powering the Planet Positive zone with solar energy to encouraging public transport, and from commissioning reusable installations to adopting sustainable catering practices, the Festival demonstrated a commitment to minimizing its environmental footprint.

Furthermore, the Festival also marked the opening of the re-developed East Point Pavilion, a venue that will serve as a year-round hub for culture, food, drink, and community gatherings. This initiative adds another dimension to the town's cultural tourism offer, contributing to a stronger, more vibrant Lowestoft.

A crucial aspect of the Festival is the involvement of volunteers, with 116 recruited for the 2022 event. They performed various roles and were integral to the Festival's success. Such opportunities allow local community members to play a hands-on role in shaping the Festival, enhancing the sense of ownership and connection.

The First Light Festival's ethos of inclusivity, community engagement, and sustainability sets a standard for other community events across the UK. By integrating the local community into its operations and extending its reach to audiences far beyond its geographical limits, the Festival truly embodies the spirit of unity and cultural celebration.

As it looks ahead to its 2023 edition, the First Light Festival's continuous drive for improvement, experimentation, and learning promises to deliver an even more exciting, enriching, and accessible celebration. It will continue to shine a spotlight on Lowestoft, its talents, and its vibrant community spirit.
