Houghton Festival 2023: Utopian Magic in the Heart of North Norfolk

As Norwich-based music aficionados, we at Compendia are blessed to have the enchanting experience of Houghton Festival just a stone's throw away. We have been privileged to attend from its inception and last year's stunning return was a spectacular highlight in the UK festival scene. This year, we're thrilled to announce that Houghton Festival is back for yet another mind-blowing session, set to take place from the 10th to 13th August 2023.

Hailed as "A utopic retreat like no other" by The Independent, and celebrated for its bespoke sound systems, mesmerising settings, hidden stages, and exquisite art installations, Houghton Festival has become synonymous with magic and unparalleled musical experiences. Not to mention its status as one of the world's most beautiful festivals, a reputation it has earned through its breathtaking location set in the rolling grounds of the Grade I-listed Pallardian mansion of Houghton Hall.

Following the triumphant comeback of Houghton Festival in 2022, this year's edition is set to be an even more enchanting celebration of art, music, and food. Under the expert direction of Craig Richards, Houghton Festival invites attendees to immerse themselves in a world surrounded by sycamore trees, deer, a restaurant on the lake, and one of the world's top-tier sculpture parks boasting works from James Turrell and Anish Kapoor. This verdant utopia will serve as the backdrop for an impressive lineup, including names like Roy Ayers, Aba Shanti-I, and Animistic Beliefs, all of whom have been personally invited by Richards himself.

Richards, renowned musical director and resident at Fabric London since its inception, extends his musical influence to the festival. Everything at Houghton, from the mixers to the 200+ artist lineup, has been hand-selected and curated by Richards, creating a wholly unique and immersive experience. This deep dedication has led Houghton to redefine the dance music festival scene, offering a more profound, transportative experience for the globally networked clubbing community.

The festival is not just a music event but a full-bodied sensory experience. Attendees can delight in the alfresco floating restaurant Turntable & Napkin or unwind at The Orchard wellness tent, complete with complimentary yoga and a 15-person sauna. At Houghton, it's the little details that truly set it apart - bespoke d&b Audiotechnik sound systems, the rare 24-hour licence that encourages longer, explorative sets into the small hours, and even the serendipitous rural magic touch of no phone signal.

Richards' influence doesn't stop at music. With his background in art studies, he also directs the creative aspects of Houghton, extending to stage design and art. A growing artists' offering sees collaborations with up-and-coming artists and renowned creators alike. The festival will also grant exclusive access to Houghton Hall's sculpture park, a haven of stunning artwork reached by a quaint, cream-coloured miniature railway.

With attendees from across the globe, including South America, Japan, and Australia, Houghton Festival promises to deliver a world-class festival experience right in the heart of Norfolk. Stay tuned as we continue to update you on the festival's developments, including the announcement of its own artist-in-residence later this summer.
